About the event
Editions Alaya is honoured to collaborate with the Buddha’s Light International Association Amsterdam (BLIA Amsterdam) in presenting a public educational programme, dedicated to the archival art of incense. This initiative of Editions Alaya establishes a dialogue between ancient Eastern Incense tradition and the contemporary search for contemplative stillness.
The inaugural session introduces the Jiangnan Literati Incense Tradition, recognised as part of China’s intangible cultural heritage, and guide participants through the hands-on process of crafting traditional incense using ancient blending techniques, offering insight into the literati philosophy of “Nurturing one’s nature through fragrance, and observing the observer within.”
The course will also feature a classical incense formula attributed to Huang Tingjian, revered in Chinese history as the Sage of Incense, inspired by the Incense Formula Manuscripts preserved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, reinterpreting the spirit, craftsmanship, and aesthetic philosophy of classical incense culture within a contemporary context.
Program Highlights:
The Heritage:
The first session introduces the Jiangnan Literati Incense Tradition, a living embodiment of China’s intangible cultural heritage. We revisit the Song Dynasty aesthetic, an era where fragrance transcended ritual to become a profound medium for philosophical reflection.
The Legacy:
A rare encounter with a signature scent by Huang Tingjian, revered as the "Sage of Incense." This formula has been meticulously reconstructed from 11th-century manuscripts preserved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, bridging an ancient spirit with the contemporary world.
The Craft:
An exploration into the delicate equilibrium of ancient blending methods and the discipline of traditional craftsmanship.
Registration Notes:
This programme is offered as a public cultural and educational initiative. Participants are welcome to contribute in the spirit of voluntary support, to help cover material preparation, venue maintenance, and related Dharma and cultural activities.
This is a non-profit community program open to all. Due to limited venue capacity, spaces are limited.
